Post subject: Burning DVD on a PowerMac 4400
Archived from groups: comp>sys>mac>hardware>video (more info?)

Hi folks !

I would need some help about burning DVDs on an old PowerMac 4400/200.
You know that this PPC is a 603e.
There is an external SCSI interface which I use to connect an external
CD-R/RW burner and it works just fine.
I have extended my memory/RAM to the max of what is possible. And I have
replaced my original internal hard drive (which is an IDE interface) by a
big HD of 60 go.
This computer is still just fine for me, for what I need to do with it.
Still, I would like to burn DVDs with it.
I don't mean creating and editing videos (softwares such as Final Cut Pro)
would be too slow (or won't run) on my Mac, but "simply" burn a perfect
clone of some DVD-R people gave me.

So here's what I would like to be able to do :

- burn video DVD-R or DVD+R (just make copies of DVD-R which already works,
not creating a DVD) which can be read on a stand-alone DVD player

- burn files on a data DVD-R in a purpose of storage

that's what I would like to do.

Inside the PPC 4400, the internal CD rom drive is ATAPI/IDE standard, as
well as the hard disc. Since external DVD burner in SCSI do not exist (I
never saw one SCSI external DVD burner), I was thinking about replacing my
internal CD rom drive by an internal IDE combo CD/DVD drive/reader/ CD/DVD
burner.
There are many models of CD/DVD burner/reader internal IDE and I would need
your help- your experience (for those with a 4400 PowerMac who have
installed a DVD burner and who success in burning DVDs with this Macintosh).

- will the PowerMac 4400 support (its bus) the transfer of data when I will
burn DVD burn ? Even at a low speed burning (x1 or x2) can a 4400 PowerMac
support a burning transfer enough accurate to obtain a perfect and safe DVD
copy ?

- PowerMac 4400 can not run on Mac OS X. Thus, I can only use softwares
which runsunder Mac OS 9.
Can Toast Titanium (vers.5) support some IDE DVD burners ?
Or do you have a list of the DVD burners that the latest version of Toast
Titanium (which can still run on Mac OS 9) can support ?

Thanks in advance for your help,
help of 4400 owners which succeeded in burning DVD with their Mac would be
great...especially if you specify which DVD burner model you bought....
